The Holidays are here! Time for being with family, friends and those we love. Time for dinners and parties and cookies and candy. And yes, for many of us…time to stray from our diets and gain a few pounds 🙁 How can we eat healthier?
Six Simple Ways To Eat Healthier
Diet advice is plentiful this time of the year. It seems everyone has thoughts on how we can be healthier in the new year. With so much diet advice around today it is little wonder if you feel somewhat confused. Whether you are wanting to lose weight, maintain your weight or help your family eat healthier….these six simple ideas will help you do just that.
1. Stay away from the inside grocery aisles
When you grocery shop, fill up your cart from the aisles around the outside the perimeter of the store. This is where the fresh fruits, vegetables and fresh foods are kept.
2. Eat small amounts frequently
Don’t allow yourself to get hungry. Keep your appetite in control with smaller meals and healthy snacks in between.
3. Eat foods made by Nature
Fresh is best and generally much better for you than prepackaged. For example, a fresh potato baked in its skin is healthier than a box of au gratin potatoes.
4. Use spices and fresh herbs
Get used to cooking with a wide variety of spices and fresh herbs. It’s possible to get fabulous flavor with these without adding high calorie fats and oils. Or extra sodium!
5. Read Fat Free labels carefully
Many “fat free” items contain additional carbs in the form of sugar. Or added salt to compensate for reduced flavor. These can do more to add to your weight than the “full strength” product.
6. Use low fat dairy products
For adults, these are healthier because low fat dairy products have the nutrients without the extra fat. Again, read the label! Look at how much sugar and salt the product has.
Getting Picky Eaters to Eat Healthier
If you are a picky eater or have someone in your family who is – usually our children – it can be especially difficult to eat healthier. And it can be a real problem during the Holidays! Afterall, who wouldn’t rather fill up on cookies than vegetables?!
But there are ways to sneak fruits and veggies into your family’s diet. Make it a fun challenge to try a new food each week. Or set up a salad bar for dinner. I love to add dried fruits to my oatmeal and fresh fruit to my salads. Click here to learn other “tricks” to eat healthier 🙂
